Civil Engineering

Civil engineering is the broadest of the engineering fields. Civil engineering focuses on the infrastructure of the world which include Water works, Sewers, Dams, Power Plants, Transmission Towers/Lines, Railroads, Highways, Bridges, Tunnels, Irrigation Canals, River Navigation, Shipping Canals, Traffic Control, Mass Transit, Airport Runways, Terminals, Industrial Plant Buildings, Skyscrapers, etc. The department was established in the year 2010 with an aim of developing human resources in the area of Civil Engineering

Civil Engineering has good scope where the construction industry (buildings), road construction, water supply, construction and restoration of water tanks and power supply, are concerned as top priority has been given to these sections by the Government. Civil engineering takes place in the public sector from municipal through to national governments, and in the private sector from individual homeowners through to international companies.

Course benefits to The civil engineering career opens a lot of opportunities in various Government Sectors. They are also employed in all major construction projects carried out by Central and State Government agencies. There are equally good opportunities in the private sector for civil engineers as a Construction Engineer, Hydraulics Engineer, Structural Engineer, Transportation Engineer, Environmental Engineer etc.

Civil Engineers build the world’s infrastructure. Within the branch of civil engineering, career path options vary. Experienced engineers generally do more complex analysis or design work, or management of more complex design projects, or management of other engineers, or into specialized consulting, including forensic engineering.

PuneethThe Civil Engineering department was established in the year 2010. Over a half decade and plus our department has carved a niche in the areas of academics, research and consultancy. The department has been actively involved in conducting conferences, Site Visits, Project Tours and several students’ related programs to provide a platform for sharing and spreading the latest developments in the field of Civil Engineering.

The Department also encourages its students to engage in extra-curricular and co-curricular activities, Special / Invited Lectures, Seminars, Technical Festivals and Nation and International Conference, Annual Alumni Meets, thus ensuring the overall development, nurturing of team spirit and organizational skills.

civil-infraThe laboratory has testing facilities to test hardness, tensile, compressive, shear and flexure strengths of metals and timber. The laboratory has a universal testing machine of 400kN capacity to test metals and timber. Toughness of metals can be determined with impact machines. Different hardness testing machines are available to find hardness number.

The surveying practice lab has linear and angular measuring instruments like chain, compass, level, theodolite, total station required for training civil engineering students. The practical sessions will facilitate the students training in the field of land survey, planning of new building projects, transportation project, environmental and water resource projects.

The lab has equipments/facilities to determine the index properties and engineering properties of soils. Recently three new equipments namely, triaxial machine with electronic measurements, automatic compactor and three gang consolidometer were added. Consultancy works are undertaken for soil investigation, SBC, compaction characteristics for various government and private agencies and also for public.

The environmental engineering civil-infra3lab is attached to civil engineering to give training to B.E, civil engg students in the field of analysis of water and waste water. The laboratory has facilities to check air pollutants in the atmosphere, noise pollution and soil pollution etc. The laboratory facilities the research activities in the area of water pollution control, air pollution control and solid waste treatment.

civil-infra5In fluid mechanics lab comprises of flow measuring devices and hydraulic machines. Discharge measurement through pipes, open channels, tanks etc., are carried out in the lab. V- notch, rectangular notch, cippoletti notch, orifice, mouth piece, ogee weir and broad crested weir are used for discharge measurement. Experiments on hydraulic machines such as centrifugal pumps, Kaplan turbine, francis turbine and pelton wheel turbines are conducted to understand the performance based on the energy and momentum principles.

civil-infra6Highway engineering deals with construction and maintenance of roads. For the construction of roads materials such as stone aggregates, filler material and bitumen are used in addition to the
soil as subgrade material below the pavements. Cement concrete is used for rigid pavements. Understanding of the strength and behavior of above materials is required during the design of highway facilities. Highway materials laboratory is designed to test soil strength as sub grade material.

The laboratory has testing facilities to test cement, aggregates, bricks, blocks and tiles. Low, medium and high strength concrete can be tested with our 200T (2000kN) compression testing machine. Fresh properties of concrete and mortar can be tested in the laboratory.
